HI! I'm Alex Smith,I'm a 28 year old illustrator, and this is my sketch blog. I started Sketch Party 2000 in April of 2007 with no real goals in mind. Soon after, it evolved into a daily ritual. I posted a sketch, photo, film, or some other piece of my art every day for a year. Somewhere in the middle of that year I went back to school, and if you start at the beginning and move toward the current entries you should be able to see that I paid attention in class. I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoy posting them, don't let this be your last visit. Updated Monday, Wednesday and Friday (and any other time I feel like it).

Entry 68

Just some more Photoshop fun in tribute to my college days, enjoy.

Entry 67

Some practice in photo manipulation today. I love when people make these comedic inspirational posters, so today I made one for my good friend Stuart, my favorite bit is how he's wearing a Clemson Tigers hat on the Enterprise. Photoshop is fun :)

Entry 66

Today I tried a little inking. The original pencils on the right were drawn by Jack Kirby in the 60's. I found them on another artist's site and lifted them to use for practice. This turned out okay I guess, it looks chunky and kinda rough and the lettering sucks, but I've done worse. Next time I'll work bigger (this was sized down from a much larger image so that I could print it on my home printer) and try to steady my strokes some.

Entry 64

I've been wanting to draw a smokin' hot pirate lady for a while now, plus I've been in serious need of working on backgrounds. So here she is with background elements HEAVILY inspired by a couple of Mike Wieringo's recent sketches. I really love the way he does beachy/shoreline kinda things, lots of bird, nice big clouds, etc. I just need to work harder on making my water look more like water. I really think I'm going to come back and clean this up some later, maybe even add some colors :)

*edit*
added the cleaned up version to top

*edit*
added a third version with some minor changes based on crits

Entry 62

This is one of the things that makes me love being an artist, and makes me love working with kids. This was drawn by a young man named D'angelo when I was subbing for his second grade class a while back, and since I just didn't have a drawing in me today I decided to share it. I inspired this kid enough for one day that he drew spider-man for me. awesome.

Power-man and Iron Fist, the original Heroes for Hire. You gotta love a hardcore super hero from the streets of Harlem in a tiara. just doodling, working on necks a bit. More to come.

Hulk cut cheese.

Entry 58

Just playing with the way I draw Superman and costumes today. I wanted to see if I could make the suit look more like clothing than paint, looks pretty good. I think the next step is to try to apply shadows to the way this costume is drawn. see ya tomorrow.

Entry 57

I usually try to keep this blog about hand drawing, but I loved how this digital photography project turned out and had to share it today. My wife modeled for a series of 13 images. I'm using them in a school project which is basically a photo book. I made mine a piece of sequential art as well, and it tells a sort of Paradise Lost kind of story, maybe I'll link the rest up later :)

Entry 56

Everyone knows that Kingdom Come Era Superman hates frogs. Its a documented fact.
....sigh...sometimes I draw weird things.

Entry 55

Not the most original Spidey pose ever, but its one I've never drawn. turned out pretty good although I think the colors are overly saturated....meh.

Entry 54

So here's the finished Strangers in Paradise piece. I think it turned out okay, I suck at perspective and backgrounds but I'll never get good unless I draw them more often, right? Enjoy this one, I'll see ya tomorrow.

Entry 53

Hey, lady, there's a huge freakin' dude behind you! Happy Friday the 13th people :)

Entry 52

The Mighty Thor has returned. He's got some changes to his costume so I was just kinda messin' around with the new helmet and the armored sleeves. It turned out pretty good I think. You also may have noticed my new digital signature, I created it as a custom brush in photoshop last night, I hope you like it.

Entry 51

For today, we have a fully finished drawing of Harry Potter. Now that I've manage to get up to 50 entries, I'm going to try to do higher quality sketches instead of just loose scraps. As I move forward with this blog I plan to work on improving my skills and paying special attention to things I don't draw well, so that I can change that. Go see this new HP movie btw, it was super fun, see ya tomorrow.

Entry 50

Had my D&D friends over tonight, so I dorked out and drew me up a wizard. nothing special mostly just a loose warm-up while we were talking, I like his eyes though.
tomorrow is my 50th entry, so I guess I need to make it extra snazzy, see ya then.

*edit: after further review I noticed I had two entry 25s, so we'll have a super special Entry 51 instead, lol*

Entry 49

One more attempt at Katchoo, her neck seems a little too long in this one, but I'm getting much closer to the character I think.

Entry 48

This is my first layout for my Strangers in Paradise drawing. I'm trying to create a similar emotional feel to Terry Moore's work and with David as a required character for this piece it almost had to involve Katchoo, and David's love for her. So my Idea is David on a park bench in the snow, crying softly as Katchoo walks away. I might try a couple other ideas, but I like this one so far.

Entry 47

For today I did this page of sketches of Katchoo and David from Terry Moore's Strangers in Paradise. I'll be doing a few more sketches to the get the feel of the characters and then I'll work on a final drawing for the first round of the Draw-off tournament this weekend at Digital Webbing. Strangers in paradise is a great book, for anyone who hasn't read it, even if you're not really into comics I would suggest it. Its got fantastic art, great writing, and it even has an official ending like a real live novel ;).

Entry 46

Today I got back to the Batman stuff. This is the Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl in the midst of some pretty sweet acrobatics. This one turned out pretty good, but I think I might just re-draw it and tweak some things here and there, maybe add a background and some color. hmmmmmm...
see ya tomorrow.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

You may have noticed the new look around here :)
this entry was my original intent for the headline but I have yet to invest the energy to actually write the code or work around the rules here on blogger to make it work correctly. enjoy.

Entry 44

Today was my good friend Kenneth's birthday. Yup, born on the fourth of July. He also happens to be one of the best amateur magicians I've ever seen so this is a rough up of a design I'm working on for him; kind of an old timey magicians poster. I'll make sure to post the piece on here when its actually finished. Happy Fourth and I'll see ya tomorrow.

Entry 43

Today is our third wedding anniversary, so I drew this for my lady-wife. My likenesses are getting a little better, but I still think I can do better, Dorothy looks pretty much like her, and I guess you can tell thats me....If you know us or whatever. I'll see ya tomorrow.

Entry 42

ha! who couldn't use a little more Calvin and Hobbes in their life? I miss Bill Watterson something fierce. I even have the final Calvin and Hobbes strip that I clipped from the newspaper set aside in my "boxe of goodies." The moral of todays piece? Never trust a tiger to give you "that cool James Dean look." For tomorrow, I'm thinking more Batman family stuff, see ya then.

Entry 41

Yesterday The Joker. Today: Batman.
meh.
see ya tomorrow.
