HI! I'm Alex Smith,I'm a 28 year old illustrator, and this is my sketch blog. I started Sketch Party 2000 in April of 2007 with no real goals in mind. Soon after, it evolved into a daily ritual. I posted a sketch, photo, film, or some other piece of my art every day for a year. Somewhere in the middle of that year I went back to school, and if you start at the beginning and move toward the current entries you should be able to see that I paid attention in class. I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoy posting them, don't let this be your last visit. Updated Monday, Wednesday and Friday (and any other time I feel like it).

Entry 09

Just some loose sketches today. I was going for a slightly less cartoony look with these, I've been thinking about trying to do a more "realistic" comic book style but keep up the intense manga style action. Thats the future of comic books, and you heard it here first.

Entry 08

Mark Hamill has a huge head. I noticed that today when I was drawing this, lol. I used a little bit of photo ref. but mostly from memory I love drawing Star Wars characters but as of yet I haven't really been able to put my personal stamp on the Star Wars universe in the way I'd like to. He's got the wrong light saber and his costume is a little off but I hope you enjoy my attempt at the whiny farm-boy none-the-less.

Entry 07

Working on my inking a little bit tonight. I'm not the best inker out there and that makes me feel like I should try to be the best inker out there. I've improved my technique quite a bit over the last year or so thanks to some classes I took and more familiarity with my pens. this drawing itself seems to be missing that sense of motion I'm always chasing after and the inking is rushed looking at points. I guess its time to work on line of action and slowing my pen work down.

Entry 05

This is an attempt at a animated style Adrien Monk. I think i might work on it some more, simplify it a little more, do some more comical facial expressions, see if I can make it look even MORE like Tony Shaloub. Its been sad that I haven't been able to keep up with this the way I want to. The whole point of starting this blog was to make sure I was drawing and learning and perfecting every single day. I promised myself I wouldn't cheat and post a bunch of old sketches here, and there have been a few legit reasons why I haven't kept up with it, I was out of town and then I was sick as hell for the longest time. I hope to eventually be able to update every single day even when I'm out of town or sick in bed. Here's hoping and me going back to the drafting table.

Entry 04

I've always wanted to do a series of girl drawings like you'd see on the side of an old bomber plane or in a Petty calendar. I used photo reference for this piece and I could have taken some liberties with the placement of her hair and the strange angle of her left arm. the face ended up making her look a bit like the model Vida Guerra, but the photo I used was a different model all together. I think my biggest problem is that I want to see more personality in the face, especially in this kind of art. For tomorrow, I think I'll work on female faces and making them more characterized. Now quickly back to the Bat-drafting table...

*edit* came back and fixed this, she had two left feet, lol

Entry 03

....Sigh. Only 4 days into it and I've already missed a day. I totally forgot about it until about 20 minutes ago. oh well it takes time to form a habit, maybe I'll set aside a certain time of day to sketch from now on. This entry was inspired by a new story I read a while back about a guy who dressed up as Batman and ran across a school yard. They shut down the school for the rest of the day on a terror alert or something, but they never did catch the guy. I thought it would be a fun character to draw, and maybe eventually animate or do a full panel to panel story. For now, though, all I have is a decently funny character design. The drafting table beckons....
