HI! I'm Alex Smith,I'm a 28 year old illustrator, and this is my sketch blog. I started Sketch Party 2000 in April of 2007 with no real goals in mind. Soon after, it evolved into a daily ritual. I posted a sketch, photo, film, or some other piece of my art every day for a year. Somewhere in the middle of that year I went back to school, and if you start at the beginning and move toward the current entries you should be able to see that I paid attention in class. I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoy posting them, don't let this be your last visit. Updated Monday, Wednesday and Friday (and any other time I feel like it).

Entry 453: Emma Frost

I actually drew two versions of this, and I'm still not really sure if I like it. I have this image of how her face should look in my head that I can't quite get down on paper. More X-men stuff to come :)

Entry 450: Kevin Spacey Cylon Ranger

My fellow D&D nerd Kenneth saw my overly elaborate character sketch, it snowballed in to me doing one for everyone. Here's his, a ranger that he wanted to look like Kevin Spacey. Hilarious.

Entry 449: Elminstopher Half-Walken

This illustration is like 1.5" x 1.5" and is basically a D&D character sketch that got out of hand. It started as a simple blue col-erase rough but evolved to full pencils, inks, prismacolor, and even a little white acrylic. The guys I prefer to role-play with enjoy a good hilarious character with an accent so this is my halfling cleric, Elmintopher Half-Walken.

Entry 447: Cyclops deux

More x-men, I give you Scott Summers, this time in full spandex glory.

Entry 446: Rogue

I told you there'd be more X-people coming. I've always loved the character of Rogue for some reason and my favorite costume was the Jim Lee version from the early 90's. They've recently given it a slight re-tweaking and brought it back for Rogue's self-discovery deal across the outback. Sweet.

Entry 445: Lara

In all seriousness this may be the first Tomb Raider drawing I've ever done aside from some rough scribbles in my early high school days. I saw an ad for the new game today and felt the need to bust this out.

Entry 443: Cyclops

I haven't drawn Cyclops in years, and now I kinda wanna draw a more action packed full body pic with some bad-ass laserness. I've been catching up on the last year or so of X-men comics lately so don't be suprised to see more X characters show up in the coming posts.

Entry 442: Republicans bug me

This was made for my editing class, and If you happen to be a Republican, or right wing at all don't take it personally, Democrats piss me off too. I just happen to live in a red state and during the whole election year I felt like I was being bombarded with right wing garbage anytime I mentioned that I didn't like John McCain. Maybe I'll do another one about how I don't care for Obama very much either, lol.

Entry 440: Trident Times Logo

I took it upon myself to re-design the logo for my college's school paper. I'm not a huge fan of the current one and I wanted a nice color logo for the new website I'm also helping with.

Entry 439: Then and Now

I sketched these out to do a meme that was floating around on Deviant Art, but I don't know if I'll ever get around to finishing them. The idea was to draw yourself in High School and then now, showing the differences, fun stew.

Entry 427: Lightning Lad

I just read Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's recent tun in Action Comics, "Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes". It was pretty cool, Superman goes into the future to help a grown up version of the Legion defeat a corrupt Justice League and all the Legion members had cool updated costumes design by the always awesome Gary Frank. Long story short; I just had to draw Lightning Lad today.

Entry 410: Peter Pan

The final project for Digital Illustration is student choice. In my case it was wife's choice, lol. Dorothy's favorite book is Peter Pan, so here's my illustration for a hardcover book. This was all created from different photos, with the exception of Tinkerbell, who i painted in photo-shop.

Entry 409: Natalie Portman Final

Final version. Very little changed here, mostly upped the contrast and played with the hair a touch.

Sunday, July 27, 2008

Entry 408: Natalie Portman WIP

I've settled on this for my final piece, mostly based on print issues with the other one. As you can see I've made some changes for the better, still a little ways to go I think.

Entry 407: Celebrity Painting Project

The fourth project for my digital illustration class. We have to create a piece based on a recognizable classic painting with a celebrity inserted as the subject. These are what I'm working on so far, Scarlett Johansen in The Birth of Venus, and Natalie Portman as Lady Godiva.

Side-note: That isn't Scarlett's real body so don't go trying to find the photo, it just ended up matching really, really well :)

Thursday, July 24, 2008

Entry 406: Reese Witherspoon

the finished portrait. My teacher mentioned that Reese Witherspoon is really hard to draw, so I challenged myself. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome, especially considering my lack of experience with this style of pencil work. I think I'm still a little heavy- handed with this, but I'm getting there :)

Entry 405: WIP

terrible scan of a portrait work in progress, its coming along pretty nicely.
